The first edition of the Brazilian Solar Energy Atlas was developed within the scope of the SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment) project.
Started in 2001, the SWERA Project was funded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and co-financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Under the coordination of INPE in Brazil, its main focus was to promote the assessment of a reliable, high quality database, with the objective of assisting in the planning and development of public policies to encourage national solar and wind energy projects, and to attract investments from the private sector in the area of renewable energy. The SWERA Project products ranged from maps and digital data of the various solar radiation components to detailed infrastructure data and socio-economic parameters of the countries participating in this pilot project. The products focused on solar energy applied to Brazil were developed through a partnership between INPE and UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), using the model of radiative transfer BRAZIL-SR and a geo-referenced database of environmental and socio-economic data made available free of charge by several national and international partners.
